Inspection and License Plate Assignment

What is checked in the inspection

The inspection for license plate assignment is carried out at a Category B Vehicle Inspection Center, authorised to inspect imported vehicles. It confirms the identity of the vehicle, its conformity with the national homologation, and its overall safety condition.

Vehicle identification

Chassis number (VIN), engine number, and match against COC and foreign registration certificate.

Technical characteristics

Displacement, power, kerb weight, gross weight, seats, fuel type, and CO₂ emissions.

Braking system

Effectiveness of service and parking brakes, imbalance between wheels, and component condition.

Steering and suspension

Play, alignment, and shock absorber condition.

Tyres and wheels

Size, load and speed rating, tread depth, and general condition.

Lighting and signalling

Headlights, indicators, brake, reverse and fog lights, including headlight alignment.

Emissions

Opacity (diesel) or gas analysis (petrol) and anti-pollution system.

Bodywork and chassis

Corrosion, deformation, glass, mirrors, and wiper blades.

Safety equipment

Seat belts, airbags, headrests, and seat mountings.

Documentation

Filling out of Mod 112 (yellow sheet) and certification of Mod 9.

If the vehicle is approved, the center hands over the documentation needed to proceed with the Customs Declaration and the license plate request at IMT.

When the inspection must be done on passenger cars

After the license plate is assigned, the vehicle is subject to the normal schedule of mandatory periodic inspections (IPO). For private passenger cars:

1st inspection — at 4 years

First mandatory inspection, 4 years after the date of first registration.

2nd inspection — at 6 years

Two years after the first inspection.

From 8 years onwards — annual

From the 8th year onwards, inspection becomes annual for the remainder of the vehicle's life.

The inspection must be done during the anniversary month of the license plate, and may be brought forward by up to 3 months without changing the date of the next inspection.

Failing to perform the inspection within the deadline results in a fine and prevents the vehicle from being driven on public roads until the situation is resolved.
